The National Trust may buy greenfield land to prevent the government continuing with their plans to build more homes. Should we be protecting these areas?
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged to build three million more homes by 2020 to tackle the housing crisis.
But the chairman of the National Trust Sir William Proby, will tell the organisation's AGM that these plans would destroy the countryside.
He is expected to ask members of The National Trust whether they should buy up green-belt areas to protect them or rely on the planning system to do so.
The government said house building would take place on brownfield sites and areas owned by the public sector, and insists green-belt land is safe.
