The government has apologised after admitting hundreds of thousands more immigrants are working in Britain than it first said.
In a written answer to Shadow Pensions Secretary, Chris Grayling, the government admits that the true total for the number of foreign workers is actually 1.5m, not the revised figure of 1.1m they slipped out last night and not the 800,000 officially recorded.
The Conservatives say the new figures are "profoundly worrying" and the Lib Dems say the admission smacks of "incompetence".
Employment Minister Caroline Flint admitted it was a "big mistake" but said foreign workers only represent about 8% of the UK workforce and contribute 6bn to the economy. She says there are more than 600,000 vacancies for British people who want jobs.
