Are too many students cheating?

Can universities beat the cheats?

Recent Leeds University research into studying habits show that growing numbers of students regularly copy material from the internet and pass it off as their own.

Businesses which sell essays over the internet have sprung up. Some of the people involved in those businesses have been open and shameless about their trade, which is not illegal.

Meanwhile universities are struggling to stay ahead of the problem. Although individual institutions will discipline anyone caught cheating, there is no single strategy across the sector; plagiarism can be hard to detect and no one knows quite how widespread it is.
